"What's the difference
between refurb, used and excess electronic equipment?"
Here
are the generally accepted definitions for used computers and electronic equipment:
Refurbished or Reconditioned - These items were
returned to the manufacturer, usually within the 30-day grace period, and have
gone through the manufacturer's reconditioning and testing process. Because technology
changes so quickly, these items may not be the latest, most up-to-date models.
However, if it isn't the current model, it is usually just one step below leading-edge
technology and priced way below retail.
30-Day
Returns - These items were sold to customers, but were returned to the original
manufacturer within 30 days of their original purchase date. It's possible that
they may not have been used at all. The law defines a computer as "used" as soon
as the customer opens the box. Regardless, the important thing for you to understand
is that these items have had very little actual use. Since the Compaq lawsuit,
30-Day Returns make up the bulk of the used computer market. You'll most likely
save a good amount of money when you buy a returned, "used" item.
Demos
- These items may have been used for demonstrations at Trade and Retail Shows,
or for evaluations by corporations or journalists. It is usually a high-end, fully
loaded system with all the extras. After all, the manufacturer configured it to
create a favorable first impression. Demos rarely have more than a month's worth
of use.
Lost Wonders - Sometimes
it's possible for manufacturers to lose machines in their warehouse. Don't laugh,
it's true. Computers and equipment are often returned to the factory, shoved into
a corner and forgotten. These are the Lost Wonders. They may not be rediscovered
or recovered for a year or more, but since they have usually been used for only
a very short time, they are often in "Like New" condition. These little treasures
don't always have the latest technology, but they are generally sold at incredibly
discounted prices.
Working Pulls
- These items may have been replaced with leading-edge technology, or may be liquidation
items from a company that is no longer in business. They may be password protected,
but should run right out of the box.
Excess
- These items are another by-product of our dynamically changing market. They
usually haven't been used at all, but were simply replaced by an updated model
or new technology before they could be sold. There are a lot of great buys in
this group.
